Brilliant Pebbles: a Method for Detection of Very Large Interstellar Grains

نویسنده

چکیده

A photon of wavelength λ ∼ 1μm interacting with a dust grain of radius ap ∼ 1mm – in other words, a “pebble” – undergoes scattering in the forward direction, largely within a small characteristic diffraction angle θs ∼ λ/ap ∼ 100. Though mm-size dust grains contribute negligibly to the interstellar medium’s visual extinction, the signal they produce in scattered light may be detectable for variable sources. Observations of variable light scattered into small angles allows for a direct measurement of the large grain population while also yielding tomographic information of the interstellar medium’s mass distribution. Aspects of the Mass Distribution of Interstellar Dust Grains in the Solar System from In-Situ Measurements

The in-situ detection of interstellar dust grains in the Solar System by the dust instruments on-board the Ulysses and Galileo spacecraft as well as the recent measurements of hyperbolic radar meteors give information on the properties of the interstellar solid particle population in the solar vicinity. Especially the distribution of grain masses is indicative of growth and destruction mechanis...

Dust in Proto-Planetary Disks: Properties and Evolution

We review the properties of dust in protoplanetary disks around optically visible pre-main sequence stars obtained with a variety of observational techniques, from measurements of scattered light at visual and infrared wavelengths to mid-infrared spectroscopy and millimeter interferometry. A general result is that grains in disks are on average much larger than in the diffuse interstellar mediu...

The Propagation and Survival of Interstellar Grains

In this paper we discuss the propagation of dust through the interstellar medium (ISM), and describe the destructive effects of stellar winds, jets, and supernova shock waves on interstellar dust. We review the probability that grains formed in stellar outflows or supernovae survive processing in and propagation through the ISM, and incorporate themselves relatively unprocessed into meteoritic ...

Interstellar Extinction by Spheroidal Dust Grains

Observations of interstellar extinction and polarization indicate that the interstellar medium consists of aligned non-spherical dust grains which show variation in the interstellar extinction curve for wavelengths ranging from NIR to UV. To model the extinction and polarization, one cannot use the conventional Mie theory which assumes the grains as solid spheres. We have used a T-matrix based ...

Comparison of cell wall proteins in putative Candida albicans & Candida dubliniensis by using modified staining method & SDSPAGE

Background: Candida species are among the most common causes of opportunistic fungal diseases. Among Candida species, Candida albicans is responsible for most infections. Having many strains, C. albicans is very polymorph. C. dubliniensis is very similar to albicans species both morphologically and physiologically. For an infection to occur, cell wall proteins play an important role as they en...
